Die Europäische Union und die NATO sind in den letzten Jahren immer wieder neuen Gefahren und Bedrohungen ausgesetzt. Islamischer Extremismus und der damit verbundende Terrorismus, die Migrations- und Flüchtlingsbewegungen nach Europa und die Aktionen von Russland fordern die Europäische Union und die NATO auf verschiedenen Eben heraus: Sie machen die Verwundbarkeit beider multilateralen Organisationen deutlich, hinterfragen ihre derzeitigen Sicherheitsstrategien im Inneren und nach Außen und führen zu dem Punkt, an dem die Weichen neu gestellt werden müssen.

Wie werden sich die transatlantischen Beziehungen unter dem amtierenden US-Präsidenten Donald Trump entwickeln, der die NATO in Frage stellt? Welche Schwerpunkte setzt die EU in ihrer Gemeinsamen Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik? Welche Möglichkeiten gibt es im Bereich des Cyberkrieges zusammen zuarbeiten?

Zu diesen und weitere Fragen laden wir herzlich zur Diskussion zusammen mit Dr. Michael O'Hanlon und Dr. Moritz Weiss am Mittwoch, den 6. Dezember 2017 um 18:00 Uhr ein. Stattfinden wird die Veranstaltung im Raum 151 am Geschwister Scholl Institut der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Oettingenstr. 67).

Dr. Michael O'Hanlon ist Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy und Forschungsdirektor an der Brookings Institution. Sein Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Verteidigungsstrategie der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, der Gebrauch von militärischen Mitteln und der nationalen U.S. Sicherheitspolitik. Derzeit hat er eine Professur an der Columbia University, Princeton University, Syracuse University und an der University of Denver, Colorado.

Von 2011 bis 2012 war er zudem Mitglied des externen Beratungsbeirats der Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Unser zweiter Referent ist Dr. Moritz Weiss. Er ist seit April 2012 wissenschaftlicher Assistent und Habilitant am Lehrstuhl für Internationale Beziehungen am Geschwister-Scholl-Institut für Politikwissenschaften der LMU München. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Sicherheitspolitik, IB-Theorien sowie die politische Ökonomie des Rüstungssektors. Derzeit leitet er das Forschungsprojekt Diversity or convergence? Explaining the development of defense-industrial policies. 
Zuvor war Dr. Moritz Weiss in der strategischen Politikberatung für das Schweizer Verteidigungs- sowie das Außenministerium tätig.

The European Union (EU) and NATO are exposed to new risks and threats over the course of the past years. Islamic extremism and the closely tied rising terrorism threats, migration and refugee movements towards Europe and the recent involvements of Russia in Europe and the United States (US) challenge the EU and NATO on different levels: they reveal the vulnerability of both multilateral organizations, scrutinize their current security strategies and make clear that those new challenges have to be faced and discussed.

How will the transatlantic relations under Donald Trump, the incumbent President of the United States who questions the NATO overall, develop? Which core areas will the EU identify and implement in their Common Foreign and Security Policy? What are ways to collaborate in cyberwars for the individual states that are members of both organizations?

Those and many more questions will be discussed by Dr. Michael O’Hanlon and Dr. Moritz Weiss on Wednesday, December 6th, 2017 at 6pm. The Academic Association for Security Studies Munich invites you to join this event. Dr. Michael O'Hanlon is a senior fellow in Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution, where he specializes in U.S. defense strategy, the use of military force, and American national security policy. He is also director of research for the Foreign Policy program at Brookings. He is an adjunct professor at Columbia, Princeton, and Syracuse universities and University of Denver. He is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies. O’Hanlon was a member of the external advisory board at the Central Intelligence Agency from 2011 to 2012. 

Our second guest speaker is Dr. Moritz Weiss. He is a research fellow and senior lecturer of International Relations at the Geschwister Scholl Institute of Political Science. His research focuses on security studies, International Relations theory, and the political economy of arms production. Currently he is leading the research project Diversity or convergence? Explaining the development of defense-industrial policies. Dr. Moritz Weiss academic articles have appeared in numerous peer-reviewed journals. In the past, he has also worked as a political consultant for Switzerland’s Department of Defense Policy and the Department of Foreign Affairs.
